PIONEER 003
Alice Coachman became the first Black woman to win an Olympic gold medal when she captured the high jump title at the 1948 London Games.
After losing her prime competitive years to the cancellation of two Olympic cycles during World War II, she seized her first international opportunity and made history. Coachman dominated national competitions long before global recognition was possible, and her victory expanded visibility for Black women in elite athletics while paving the way for future Olympic champions.
